I have explored many different styles of creating with a wide variety of mediums. But when I honed in on what inspires me most, I found I’m happiest when I create work that elicits a deeply personal response through representational images.
For me, representational art provides a tangible link to something specific; such as a fond memory, a person from the past or as a means to enhance a personal journey.
My vision is to create work that connects in the way a family heirloom pocket watch would; with quiet reverence and lifelong enrichment. In pursuit of that deeply personal vision,
For me, creating art is not only an emotional journey, but an exercise in comprehension as well. Whether that’s deeply understanding the spirit of another through portraiture, or communing with nature in a landscape, I seek to know through observation.
Origins of Numismatic Art As a numismatist, I have a deep appreciation of the art work featured on classic US coinage, and the artists that brought those works to the American public through the medium of coinage, such as: Augustus Saint-Gaudens, George Morgan, and Christian Gobrecht. One day on a lunch break at work,
I began sketching out a Morgan Dollar on a yellow note pad. Satisfied with this work, I took the sketch home to finish it, and posted it on a coin collecting group on Facebook, thinking it would amuse the other collectors. I thought, “perhaps this could be a way for me to collect ‘coins’ that would otherwise be unattainable”.
The next morning I found the post had hundreds of comments, many from collectors asking if they could buy the sketch. Initially intending on keeping the sketch, I relented and a bidding war broke out. Today I create numismatic art as a means for collectors to enhance their collecting journey. Sometimes the work is of a specific, favorite coin - scratches and all. But often I create images of aspirational pieces that focus on the intended beauty of the original designer. These images help to inspire, motivate, and keep collectors on track to realize their collecting goals. Either way, owning original art provides the experience of owning something that’s truly one of kind.
